Scotch Tasting: the Islay selections
More from 01/15/10
Gordon MacPhail Ardbeg Distillery 22 year: pretty spectacular stuff- gauze, fresh linen, smoke, green tea, lemon peel, pink peppercorn, the sea, honey & menthol.

Caol Ila "Unpeated Style" 10 year: this one is new to the market- you would think it would taste more like Irish Whiskey, instead it reminded me of fine Tequila; very floral, briny and sweet, über-unctuous, bruised banana & a slight note of sweet tart candy. A beast.
Ardbeg 17year: a classic- peat, rosemary, gauze, prosciutto.
Duncan Taylor Bowmore Distllery 37 year: not wanting to like something aged this long was impossible. This was supberb- perfumey persimmons, orange blossom, the sea, a hint of graphite, plum, ginger, lemon peel; long and elegant.
This Islay lineup up was gross & incredibly diverse. I think Campbeltown & Islay are my favorites.

About the event:
This was the seventh year my friends have thrown this huge event. This was the second year I attended. There were tons of whiskies from all over Scotland.
I ate a huge lunch at Home Slice Pizza before the event, plus drank mucho water. I told myself to get through 20; I got through 15. I cut with water when necessay. I never got behind the wheel of a car because that would be stupid. Taxis service rules.
