Flipping flashcards: Sam's Club

This is a new series: places I flip flashcards.  Passing the theory portion of the MS Diploma Exam is not easy, I have to steal time whenever & wherever I can.

I like the dichotomy & the irony.  I’m eating a Polish dog (actually two) with sauerkraut & mustard, plus a ridiculously huge Diet Coke ($3.25 with tax).  It’s pretty quiet & a rather humble setting.  I'm studying Champagne and Sparkling Wine. I tell myself not to judge, stick to my task, I only have one hour.

@LArtusi + @dellanimaNYC thanks for loaning us Chefs Gabe and Katherine Thompson

Photo

It's been over a year (way too long). We went to Paggi House, then ESSR to order one of everything. Nice.

A quick stop at the Good Knight for Absinthe.

Master Sommelier Exam Study Day with 1997 Fèlsina Chianti Classico

Photo

Blind tasting this morning wasn't unsuccessful. There is room for improvement for sure, but overall I'm happy. This beautiful 1997 Fèlsina Chianti Classico came right out of Greg Randle's cellar. Thanks, CWE!

My lunch was a glass of the Chianti and a smoked lamb flatbread dish. Nice. Look at the color of the wine, a beautiful garnet-rust. It was sublime, dusty cherry, prosciutto fat, damp earth & truffle.

I'm reorganizing all of my notecards right now. It's a little tedious, but I'm almost done.

Austin, TX tearing down the Pleiades (Enfield & Pease Rd.)

Photo

In astronomy, the Pleides is an open star cluster. In our neighborhood, the Pleides is an open sore cluster.

We've been staring at this symbol of abandoned real estate avarice for three years or so.

I just walked by this crap-zone and asked the workman what they're doing. He said, "we're demolishing it." Nice. Finally.

Austin, TX studying at Caffe Medici

Photo

I planned on the UTFAL today, rode my bike the short 2.1 mile route, put my bike on the rack, & noticed NO LOCK & CHAIN. Are you kidding me! What an idiot!

So I walked over to Medici. Good thing, this is my third espresso. I am sort of zombied out today. Hopefully, I snap out of it before I blind taste tonight.

East End Wines Grand Opening

Just off of 11th Street in East Austin, East End Wines celebrates its Grand Opening tomorrow. Many of you may know the owner Matt Miller. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Miller, I encourage you to get to know him and his store. East End Wines is a true labor of love.

For those of you whom visit Boggy Creek Farm as your part of your Saturday morning routine, I suggest swinging by East End Wines on the way back into town. Maybe share what you plan on making with your bounty and allow them to make wine pairing suggestions. Take a few bottles home with you. Support a true indy-Austin wine store.

99% of the wines presented to me for blind tasting are from East End Wines. They are the official sponsor of my endeavor to pass the Master Sommelier Diploma Exam. Thank you, Matt!

Unfortunately, I can't actually visit the store until I pass the test. It's beneficial for me to be completely unaware of what's on their shelves. But of the 30 or so wines I've tasted thus far from EEW, I can say these represent true expressions of classic styles from the classic winemaking regions of the world. That's what you want in a wine store!
